One of my favorite German writers, Thomas Mann (1875-1955) had to immigrate to America in 1933 was persecuted by the Nazi regime. After finishing one of his greatest works there, he was asked in an interview how he could succeed in using the German language after many years living in a foreign country. He replied: As long as I write in German, I feel at home, the language is my country.
